Past Meetings

The LRN organizes a yearly conference, the “Leibniz-Wirkstofftage”, which is public since 2014. Each year another member organizes the conference, giving the participants the additional chance to explore the host institute. The conference features national and international keynote speakers from science and industry and a series of short presentations from the member institutes or associated partners.

Leibniz Conference on Bioactive Compounds 2024

Annually, the Leibniz Research Network Bioactive Compounds organizes the “Leibniz Conference on Bioactive Compounds”. The conference provides an opportunity for exchange and also highlights a member of the Leibniz Association. This year, the Leibniz Institute on Aging – Fritz Lipmann Institute (FLI) in Jena hosted the meeting. On April 24 and 25, 70 scientists from around the world met to gather in the Thuringian research hub. Among the keynote speakers were Fabrizio D’Adda Di Fagagna from the Institute of Molecular Oncology in Milan and Jan Krönke from Charité in Berlin. The conference traditionally fosters dialogue between disciplines as well as between science and industry.

In addition to professional exchange, award ceremonies were also on the agenda. The award “Leibniz Drug of the Year 2024” went this year to the team of Yvonne Mast from the DSMZ for their findings in biotransformation-coupled mutasynthesis for the generation of novel pristinamycin derivatives. This year´s prize was awarded to Professor Krönke from the Department of Hematology, Oncology and Tumorimmunology, Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin. He is one of the pioneers of PROTAC research, which is now experiencing an indescribable boom. In particular, he has played a leading role in clarifying the role of thalidomide and ubiquitin ligases and in blood cancer in general, which often cannot be targeted by the usual mitosis inhibitors. He is one of the few physicians with active drug research.

Moreover, young researchers had the opportunity to attract attention: as part of a competition, the best poster presentation (Selin Bulut, DWI Aachen) and best young scientist´s talk (Sundar Hengoju, HKI Jena) were awarded with a prize.

Leibniz Conference on Bioactive Compounds 2023

Prizes for the best lecture and best poster go to young scientists of the IPB

Scientists from the member institutes of the Leibniz Research Network “Bioactive Compounds” came together for this year’s conference in Braunschweig from May 24 to 25, 2023. This year it was the turn of the DSMZ to host the event and welcome the participants in the lecture hall of the neighboring Helmholtz Forum (HZI). The meeting served – as usual – as a platform for exchange and discussion as well as for the presentation of scientific results in the form of lectures and poster presentations.

This year, for the first time, prizes were awarded for the best poster as well as for the best junior scientist talk. From the presented scientific posters as well as talks of the young scientists, the participants chose the best ones. Both awards went to young IPB scientists: Ibrahim Morgan was honored with the award for the best poster, Mohamad Saoud received the award for the best talk.
